The hDMT institute is dedicated to advancing groundbreaking biomedical technologies for better health outcomes.
Job description
Due to the upcoming retirement of the current director, hDMT (Institute for human Organ and Disease Model Technologies) is seeking a strategic and inspiring Managing Director with a strong network in both academia and industry. You will drive the growth, funding, and valorization of pioneering biomedical technologies such as Organ-on-Chip. By expanding hDMT's national and international network, you will ensure the institute continues to increase its impact.
About hDMT
hDMT is a leading Dutch consortium of universities, academic hospitals, and companies collaborating on the development of human organ and disease models. These model systems enable better understanding of diseases, more efficient drug development, and provide alternatives to animal testing. Applications span healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry, nutrition, and toxicology-contributing to faster, more effective, and safer innovations.
Your Role
As Managing Director, you are the face of hDMT and lead a team of professionals based at various locations. Acting as the central connector, you work closely with scientists, industry partners, and government bodies to create opportunities and facilitate the translation of innovations into practice. You are responsible for strategic partnerships, fundraising, and increasing societal and economic impact. Additionally, you strengthen hDMT's position within the science, government, and industry ecosystem, guiding the organization into its next phase of growth.
You are a dynamic and inspiring leader who enthusiastically positions hDMT on the map, driving new collaborations and funding opportunities. You know how to foster a cohesive team, even when members work from different locations and are seconded from other organizations.
Your key focus areas:
-
Strategic Leadership - Develop and implement a long-term strategy for growth and impact.
- Funding & Partnerships - Secure grants, funding, and private investments, while building strong consortia.
- Valorization & Business Development - Facilitate the translation of scientific advances into market applications.
- Leadership - Inspire and lead a team of highly qualified professionals (PhD level).
- Networking & Stakeholder Management - Connect industry, academia, and government in national and international collaborations.
- International Representation - Position hDMT within European and global consortia and innovation programs.
Working Environment
You will be formally employed by TU Delft and seconded to hDMT. To date, hDMT has been a virtual institute, but efforts are underway to establish an office centrally in the Netherlands. You will have access to the infrastructure of partner organizations.
This role offers significant flexibility regarding working hours and locations, while also requiring regular travel within the Netherlands and Europe for meetings and relationship management. You will collaborate intensively with colleagues and external partners through calls, online meetings, and physical (thematic) gatherings. The future scope of your role will evolve in line with hDMT's growth and ambitions as a consortium.

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment - which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
