Jumbo’s ambition is to be the most customer-oriented company. We want to surprise customers and exceed expectations, so they enjoy shopping with us. With over 700 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium, the option to have groceries delivered via jumbo.com, our own distribution centers, and office colleagues, we work together every day towards this ambition. Together, we strive to win over the customer.
As a Data Scientists within Jumbo, you build data-science products that help to turn even more customers into fans. Imagine walking into a Jumbo supermarket and seeing the effect of your models all around you: a data-driven lay-out of the store, fresh products due to an excellent forecast, an assortment selection of products that is well tailored to the local market needs and opening times which are based on granular data of the environment the store is located in.
Getting started! This is what you’ll doStraight from the start, you’ll be working on challenging projects, that will stretch your analytical and interpersonal capabilities. Those projects can be all throughout Jumbo, ranging from logistics to marketing and from formula to procurement. You’ll build data science products from start (raw data) to end (production grade models). Easily, 50% of your time might is spent on data preparation, exploration, (advanced) analytics and even some BI, so it is important you enjoy that as well next to
Machine Learning. We focus on outcome, not output: turning customers into fans by better decisions based on the insights you uncover.
Your workday as a Salesforce Developer at Jumbo:09.00 – 11.00 : you work in DataBricks (PySpark) on our massive datasets to improve the model that estimates transferability of products, which plays a key role in selecting the right products in our assortment
11.00 – 12.00 : you look into the latest results your opening time optimizer recommends for stores.
12.00 – 12.45 : lunch meeting with your colleagues from DS&A in our Foodcafé
13.00 – 15.00 : you peer review a model developed by a colleague for improving our loyalty offers, leveraging and expanding your knowledge about the transferability model
15.00 – 17.00 : you attend a workshop that looks into improving our differentation of store lay-outs using a data-driven approach.
As a data scientist, you are part of an enthusiastic, international team of ~15 colleagues. You’ll report into Wendell Kuling. We would describe the atmosphere at the team as cooperative, entrepreneurial, committed to delivering and always improving/learning.
You’ll cooperate closely with colleagues from different departments, including end-users, data analysts and consultants from the business departments and engineers from IT.
Typically youAt Jumbo, we look for go-getters, people with good ideas and the courage to work together on them. We care for each other: our customers, colleagues, and the world around us, and we want to do a little better every day. All our (future) colleagues bring a healthy dose of Jumbo DNA with them, and so do you! Additionally, you have:
MSc or Ph.D. With excellent academic results in the field of Computer Science, Econometrics, Data Science or other quantitative fields;
0 – 3 years of relevant experience;
You’re passionate about Machine Learning and bring a solid understanding of supervised and unsupervised learning methods (RF, LGBM, XGB, Lasso/Ridge, SVD, KNN, ALS, LLMs, …), statistics and time series analysis (BSTS, SARIMA-X, etc.). Knowledge of optimization methods (LP / MILP) is a strong plus;
You know that the field of Data Science is continually evolving, so a learning attitude is second nature to you. And you realize that staying effective requires learning both soft- and hard-skills.
You rather deliver code and working data-products than Powerpoint slides: Python is required, PySpark is a strong pre. SQL and R are nice to haves. You like to build data-tooling such as PowerBI. DataBricks experience would be great;
Solid communication and cooperation skills: you can explain what the ‘so what’ (and sometimes ‘why’) is of a model recommendation. You take end-users of your models in the right pace along with you in the (im)possibilities of your models;
Although Dutch language skills are a pre, they are not required.
At Jumbo, you will find a working environment with warmth, fun, and attention to each other, where you have plenty of room to contribute to our ambition to become the most customer-oriented company. And just as you are there for our customers, we are there for you. You can count on:
- A gross salary between €3.700 - €4.800 per month (based on 40 hours).
- An annual bonus of max 5% of your annual salary, based on organizational goals.
