The Holland Hybrid Heart consortium aims to do the necessary fundamental research up until the animal trials to produce a total artificial heart. The objectives for this heart are to ensure it is pliable, incorporates a pulsatile flow mechanism, and features a tissue-engineered inner lining at all points where it comes into contact with human blood. Our consortium acknowledges that this project will only be successful if we can unlock the brains and talents of our researchers. We therefore organize ourselves into research teams that aim to accomplish clear, identifiable but challenging goals.
Once a year the entire group convenes for the Integration week. A week in which we attempt to put together everything we have built. During these weeks we hope to fail a lot, learn a lot, have a lot of fun together and make plans for the coming year. Besides that, we have monthly meetings within each work package to work efficiently together. Our goals are to develop the HHH prototype based on existing knowledge and developments. The prototype must contain two ventricles including artificial valves, that work in a pulsatile manner.
Main technical challenges for this position will be:
- Design and fabrication of the prototypes, mainly the soft actuators.
- Think along an active or passive balancing mechanism and its implementation to the prototype and follow-up evaluations towards validation and further optimizations.
- Energy efficiency.
- Size minimization.
- Develop a platform for testing different prototypes which facilitate and speed up experiments.
You will be part of Holland Hybrid Heart consortium and working within the department of cardiothoracic surgery at Erasmus MC supervised by Prof. Jolanda Kluin.
You work closely with other PhD and Postdoctoral researchers in a lab, equipped with instruments suited for early-stage prototyping and testing.
ProfielSpecific requirements:
- You must have a master degree and PhD obtained within the field of mechanics, industrial design and manufacturing, or Soft Robotics, expertized in design, modeling and fabrication.
- You have to know various fabrication methods and know how to employ those methods for prototyping. Indeed, having the knowledge of heart Biomechanics and implantable devices is a bonus.
We expect the candidate to have/be:
- Fluent in English and skilled in scientific writing.
- Skilled in hands-on and practical projects.
- Skilled in 2D and 3D computational modeling.
- Eager to face and tackle unknown challenges that may rise up any time during the project.
- Able to work within a multidisciplinary consortium which needs high skills of communication and sharing knowledge. Note that you will be mostly working closely with researchers (PhDs and Postdocs) within Erasmus MC.
- Creative! Creativity is the key to reach our goal. You must be creative to come up with innovative idea, and more significant, brave enough to implement and assess their idea.
