What you do as a Senior Consultant Port Economics
The position is based in the Netherlands and will involve worldwide travel as well. You will manage and carry responsibility for project work (including report writing, field work, supervision, organisation, consultation, and project management). Further general responsibilities in this position consist of:
- Presentation in both external and internal arenas;
- Attracting new clients and projects for the advisory group (business development) and proposal writing;
- Developing and maintaining key client relationships and act as account manager for a selected number of key clients;
- Identifying potential leads and sharing them with other members of the team as required;
- Staff technical training.

You will become a part of a nice and close-knit team of 18 motivated colleagues, but at the same time you are part of a world-renowned international engineering consultancy firm with more than 6.000 employees, with all the advantages that this entails. The Economics & Operations (E&O) Advisory Group is part of our Business Line Water and Maritime. We primarily focus on port authorities, terminal operators, shipping companies, banks, investment funds, as well as government agencies and IFIs. In the market, you can also find us working under our brand name Ocean Shipping Consultants. We support our customers by providing insight into the development of their market and assets. We offer our knowledge when they are faced with investment decisions or enter a transaction to acquire or dispose of an interest in assets in this sector. Based in London, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Indonesia - the E&O team has a blue-chip global client base covering major shipping lines, port and terminal operators, and financial clients.
Our services therefore consist of market studies, commercial due diligence support, business cases, socio-economic cost-benefit analyses, PPP advisory, and strategy consultancy. We use our knowledge and experience for projects in other business lines within Royal HaskoningDHV as well, such as in the field of energy transition, industry, mobility, water, and rail/road infrastructure. If needed, we team up with the digital business line of Royal HaskoningDHV, with 250 professionals in data engineering, data science, software development, and digital strategy consulting.
What you bring
We are looking for a Senior Consultant with business development skills. A candidate with a strong external network in the maritime industry, including terminal operators, banks and/or investors. We expect that you as a Senior Consultant Port Economics can contribute to the further development of our market presence as well as deliver services to our clients.
As a Senior Consultant we expect you to have in-depth knowledge of the shipping and port markets and strong business development skills. You gained this experience in a professional position in a similar industry, preferably in a consultancy environment or in the maritime industry. Furthermore, you have:
- A MSc in Economics; Transport Economics; or MBA;
- Minimum of 10 years of experience;
- Fluency in the English language;
- Experience of managing more junior staff for project delivery.
It would be desirable if you also possess programming knowledge (in Python, R) and direct experience in shipping, ports, or terminals. Skills of other languages and a financial background are a plus.
