Are you passionate about design methodologies for the sustainable development of the urban living environment? Would you like to anticipate the impact of the 21st century digital revolution on our cities and the way we plan and design these?
Functieomschrijving
We are looking for an assistant professor who is eager to work on education of tomorrows designers and city builders and to contribute to innovative research on systemic urban transition. All to make a lasting impact on the reform of our cities to become more sustainable future living environments enabling future generations a more lasting and inclusive quality of life.
Urbanism and Urban Architecture group
In this role you will be positioned in the chair of Urbanism and Urban Architecture. Buildings, cities and regions matter to people's lives. Well-planned cities help communities prosper and flourish, and therefore city planners can make a difference. Planning for better cities requires new forms of collaboration, organizational structures and new urban futures. In rethinking the fundamental societal challenges facing the urbanizing world today, UUA realizes interaction between urban planning and design, cultural heritage and place identity, as well as public space design and architecture. Our work is firmly rooted in inter- and trans-disciplinary theories and methods form the fields of urban planning and design, urban studies as well as innovation and transition studies.
These fundamental challenges playing out in cities in the global north and the Netherlands in general, are especially pressing in booming regions like the Metropolitan Region Eindhoven. Moreover, in the MRE there is a strong eco-system of quadruple helix governance taking on as a region itself to develop innovative solution pathways to (trans)form the urban living environment in such a way that these challenges of sustainable urban development are met in the interest of society at large and future generations.
The UUA chair has therefore developed extensive and structural collaborations with stake- and shareholders in the MRE to work on these challenges, bridging teaching and research into innovative pathways with sustainable and beneficial societal impact. The group works on a broad gamma of topics in collaborative long-term programs ranging from healthy cities, inclusive cities, and circular cities to historical cities. Touching on topics like active lifestyle and active environment design, housing cultures and neighborhood design, climate change and public space and urban green infrastructure design, new economies and historical urban landscape design. These studies are rooted in the region as the base for empirical research but are strongly linked to more general (inter-) national research networks, consortiums, projects and other academic venues.
The chair is shaping these collaborations through a combination of challenge-based learning, action field research and learning organizations. In teaching, this is organized through the Urban Lab programs, in research through the Urban Development Initiative (UDI) programs.
You will be one of the leading researchers in the 'Urban Planning Reimagined' program of the UDI and its related projects. Focus is on a socio-technical paradigm shift in the way the city is designed and planned in an age of digitalization. This relates amongst others in socio-technical terms to an IOT sensor networked urban environment generating increasingly richer data sets, giving deeper insight on the socio-spatial functioning of urban systems. But also, in expanding social media and apps fundamentally changing citizens urban behavior patterns and routines. Resulting in professional urban planning practices which are more and more based on digital information and facilitated by digital tooling's but also situated in fundamental changing socio-institutional practices of increasing multi-actor involvement.
This Reimagined lens on urban planning and design of course, plays out in all the chairs focusing on healthy cities, inclusive cities, circular cities and historical cities. Especially in the circular city program of the Urban Lab on 'Climate adaptive cities' there is room for the candidate to link these new digitally supported urban planning and design methodologies to the planetary issues on a healthy, resilient and bio-diverse urban living environment. Issues that are studied in this program specifically in the (re-) design and (re-) planning of urban green infrastructure, the water system and public space design addressing topics of urban comfort, rewilding urban nature or recommitment of the urbanite to the urban green.
Key objectives of the position

Especially in the master track USRE, the interaction between research and design, between theory and practice is central, both on the level of district master planning, the city plan, and that of the region. The candidates' contribution will focus on teaching digitally supported design and planning methodologies.
You will be one of the leading researchers in both the 'Urban Lab' and the 'Urban Planning Reimagined' programs and its related projects as well as more general in the research of the UUA chair and the USRE unit. You will engage in scholarly activities, such as writing proposals for national and international grants, applied and academic research projects, contributing to the research activities of the group in collaborated efforts with co- workers, supervise master and PhD students and present the outcomes of the research activities at international conferences and in well-respected academic and professional journals.
