You make the difference
The position is based at the BIH QUEST Center for Responsible Research, which aims to increase value and reduce waste in biomedical research. The student assistant will work with members of the Meta-research and Automated Screening Group to conduct studies, and contribute to the development of new tools designed to screen scientific papers for common problems. Student assistant activities may extend into a masters thesis project. Applicants should note that meta-research is different from meta-analysis. Meta-research, or science of science, can help us to improve science by identifying common problems with the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of scientific studies. We can use this information to develop targeted solutions to improve scientific research.
Job Overview
- Coding: we are specifically looking for students with intermediate or strong coding skills in R or Python to assist with creating new automated screening tools, improving existing tools or conducting research using these tools. Experience with machine learning and use of version control systems (e.g., gitHub) would be beneficial.
- Data curation: The team is currently developing tools to screen publications for open science practices problems and adherence to reporting guidelines. These tools allow us to provide authors with customized feedback to improve reporting. Applicants can learn more about how these tools will be used here: https://rdcu.be/cdnWk. The student assistant may help to create training and validation data by reviewing papers and classifing them according to the criteria that the tool will assess.
We are looking for
- Attention to detail, and the ability to perform repetitive tasks in a consistently high quality manner
- A willingness to learn about meta-research and strategies for improving transparency and reproducibility in published papers
- The ability to quickly adapt to new projects
- Collaborative, multidisciplinary team work
- Intermediate level skills with R and/or Python is essential for students who would like to work on coding
- Prior experience with meta-research or systematic reviews is beneficial, but not required
